Activism is active in Minnesota

By Eleanor Steffen

In the wake of a new administration and the first week of Black History Month, activism has started to pick up across the nation. Minnesota is no exception and the news says it all.

New square, no problem?: Construction was delayed for George Floyd Square in Minneapolis on Thursday as the project's final product has yet to be decided, according to MPR. Property owners aim to maintain the intersection, Minneapolis City Council members are advocating for a pedestrian plaza, and local activists advise that the cost of construction be reallocated to social programs and housing, according to the network.

Project vs. Protest: In opposition of Project 2025, a conservative political proposal that has become associated with the Trump Administration, a protest was organized outside of Minnesota's capital building in St. Paul on Wednesday, according to Fox 9. This protest was part of the 50501 movement that aimed to assemble protests at all 50 of the nation's capitals in one day, says the station.

Mark your calendar: The Twin Cities area has many social and cultural events scheduled for February to celebrate Black History Month, starting on Thursday, Feb. 6, according to CBS News. The schedule includes a range of events such as keynote speakers, live performances, and museum exhibits, says the network

Community question: What campus job would be the best?

"Well, I actually really like my desk job. It's pretty flexible as far as hours go and where you can work and with your classes. And also, the pay is pretty decent, considering it's a student job. It's a perfect opportunity for full-time students."

-Tag Snell, 22, Minneapolis

Quote of the day:

"The city is always evolving. I'm very optimistic, especially for 2025, where the city is going. It'll be where you got that suck that has been working like crazy. But below the surface, you can't quite see how hard it's paddling. I think in 2025 you'll see a lot of this work come to fruition."

-Jacob Frey, mayor of Minneapolis, in a Q&A with Southwest Voices on Wednesday to promote his candidacy for mayor this year. He is running for a third and final term. Frey's campaign addresses many issues that currently impact the Minneapolis area, such as homelessness and economic strains on small businesses, according to the Q&A

I chose the stories above because they feel particularly relevant to the current month and state of American politics. Each story also maintains a certain level of severity in order to create a more well-rounded newsletter.

I chose the quote of the day above because it acknowledges an important election and provides a bit of positivity to the newsletter.
